Trade Unions and Representatives — Essential Manager Skills
Managers are often the day-to-day face of the organisation's relationship with trade unions and employee representatives. A delayed response, unclear promise or defensive meeting can damage trust; a professional, well-prepared approach can resolve concerns early and strengthen employee relations.
This focused half-day course gives managers the essential knowledge and communication skills to understand representative roles, handle requests consistently, conduct constructive meetings and know when Human Resources or senior management must become involved. It also prepares managers for the trade-union changes taking effect during 2026, including the reforms scheduled for 30 October.
The practical objective: "I understand the representative relationship, can respond professionally within my authority and know when to pause, record and escalate."

What Changes From 30 October 2026
Trade-union information, access, facilities and representative rights are changing
This half-day workshop is designed to get your management team's essentials right quickly, without wading through full negotiation or industrial-relations theory. October 2026 brings changes concerning information about union membership rights, workplace access, facilities and representative rights — building on other reforms already in force during 2026.
Work from current organisational procedures, recognition or collective agreements and specialist advice. Do not invent or refuse arrangements locally where detailed rules apply.
Details that remain subject to regulations, Codes or updated guidance are clearly identified during the training, and this workshop reflects the law and official guidance available at the time of delivery.
This workshop combines the change map with practical response habits, so managers know exactly what they can decide — and when to pause and check.
Trust Is Built — or Damaged — in the Everyday Interactions
Representative relationships are built through everyday management behaviour, not only during formal consultation or disputes. Union representatives and non-union employee representatives may have different roles, mandates and rights.
Managers need clear boundaries: listening and working constructively does not mean making unauthorised commitments. Accurate records and timely escalation protect employees, representatives, managers and the organisation alike.
Half-Day Workshop vs Full-Day Programme
Both options teach the same Recognise → Respond → Record → Refer → Review foundation, but they serve different needs. This half-day workshop gives managers the essential grounding and confidence to handle everyday requests and meetings well.

Half-Day Workshop Outline
The workshop uses realistic scenarios and short practical exercises throughout — the goal is a memorable, usable checklist rather than a legal lecture.
Delegates build an accessible picture of employee voice and the people involved, using a quick mapping activity to identify who represents whom and who can approve decisions, then explore common misunderstandings about what representatives can and cannot appropriately do.
Delegates consider consistent responses to time-off and facilities requests within law and organisational arrangements, then work through the confirmed direction of the October 2026 workplace-access changes using a practical access exercise involving both physical and digital requests.
Delegates prepare for a fair and purposeful representative meeting, then practise professional management behaviour and maintaining boundaries when challenge becomes firm, using the manager's practical checklist: Recognise → Respond → Record → Refer → Review. The workshop closes with an integrated manager exercise and each delegate's personal action plan.
